Local searches drive an enormous share of retail foot traffic and service bookings, and nearly all of that attention concentrates in the Maps local pack. Three listings capture the bulk of the clicks, which makes those three positions the most valuable real estate in local search.
Google ranks local results on three pillars: relevance, distance, and prominence. Distance you cannot change. The other two are entirely within your control.
“if your local business is not listed in the maps local 3-pack, you are losing the majority of nearby search traffic.”
Most profiles underperform because they are half-finished. Primary and secondary categories need to match what you actually sell, every service and product should be listed explicitly, and the description should use the language customers use. An incomplete profile gives Google less to match a query against.
Prominence is built from review volume and velocity plus consistent citations across the web. Automated SMS or email requests triggered at the point of sale keep reviews arriving steadily, which matters more than a burst of ratings followed by two silent years.
Citation consistency is the unglamorous half. If directories disagree about your address or phone number, Google becomes less confident about your location and rankings soften. Auditing and correcting that data is tedious and reliably effective.
One page listing every city you cover competes for none of them. Individual pages with genuinely local content (real service details, actual projects, area-specific information) give you a chance to appear across your whole territory rather than only your home address.
Retailers can feed shelf inventory into Google so nearby shoppers see that an item is in stock. That converts a search that would otherwise end in an online order into someone walking through your door.
