AI & SEO

what changed when customers started asking chatgpt for a recommendation

Search is going through its biggest structural change since indexing was invented. Conversational models such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini increasingly answer the question outright, and the user never sees a list of links. For brands, that shifts the job from ranking a page to being the source the answer is built from.

Classic search marketing leaned on keyword matching and backlink volume. AI crawlers work differently. They favor content that is structured in schemas, organized into clear semantic hierarchies, and corroborated by mentions elsewhere on the web.

the goal is no longer just ranking page one. it is becoming the trusted source the answer is assembled from.

Structure beats keyword density

A language model parsing your site is looking for unambiguous facts: what you do, where you operate, what a service includes, what it costs. JSON-LD structured data states those directly instead of leaving them to be inferred from marketing copy. Practically, that means marking up your organization, services, locations, and FAQs, and keeping that markup honest, because inconsistency between your schema and your visible content undermines both.

Answer the question in the first paragraph

Content written for AI retrieval front-loads the answer. A section that opens with a direct, self-contained response and then expands is far easier to quote than one that builds slowly toward a conclusion. This is also better for human readers, who were never especially patient either.

Entity authority is the new backlink

Models weigh how consistently an entity appears across sources they trust. Consistent business details across directories, genuine coverage, real reviews, and accurate profiles all reinforce that you are what you claim to be. Contradictions such as three versions of your address or a phone number that changed two years ago actively erode it.

What to do now

  • Add JSON-LD for your organization, services, and FAQs, and keep it in sync with the page.
  • Restructure key pages so each section answers one specific question directly.
  • Audit your business information everywhere it appears and make it identical.
  • Track AI referral traffic separately; it behaves nothing like organic search.
  • Keep the technical basics healthy: crawlability and speed still gate everything else.

None of this replaces SEO. Fast, well-structured, genuinely useful pages are what both systems reward. The difference is that being merely competitive no longer clears the bar: in an answer engine there is frequently only one citation, and it either names you or it does not.
